چکیده

We use four Chandra gratings spectra of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1820 30 to better understand the nature of certain X-ray absorption lines inX-ray binaries, including theNe ii, Ne iii, Ne ix, O vii, andO viii lines. The equivalent widths of the lines are generally consistent between the observations, as expected if these lines originate in the hot interstellar medium. No evidence was found that the lines were blueshifted, again supporting the interstellar medium origin, although this may be due to poor statistics. There is apparent variability in the O viii Ly line equivalent width providing some evidence that at least some of the O viii absorption arises within the system. However, the significance is marginal (2.4 ), and the lack of variation in the other lines casts some doubt on the reality of the variability. From calculating the equivalent hydrogen column densities for a range of Doppler parameters, we find they are consistent with the interstellar origin of the lines. In addition, we fit the spectra with photoionization models for locally absorbing material, and find that they can reproduce the spectrum well, but only when there is an extremely low filling factor. We conclude that both the ISM and local absorption remain possible for the origin of the lines, but that more sensitive observations are needed to search for low-level variability. Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

A Search for Iron Emission Lines in the Chandra X-ray Spectra of Neutron Star Low-mass X-ray Binaries

While iron emission lines are well studied in black hole systems, both in X-ray binaries and Active Galactic Nuclei, there has been less of a focus on these lines in neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). However, recent observations with Suzaku and XMM-Newton have revealed broad asymmetric iron line profiles in 4 neutron star LMXBs, confirming an inner disk origin for these lines in neu...

X-ray Studies of Two Neutron Stars in 47 Tucanae: toward Constraints on the Equation of State

We report spectral and variability analysis of two quiescent low mass X-ray binaries (X5 and X7, previously detected with the ROSAT HRI) in a Chandra ACIS-I observation of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. X5 demonstrates sharp eclipses with an 8.666±0.01 hr period, as well as dips showing an increased NH column. The thermal spectra of X5 and X7 are well-modeled by unmagnetized hydrogen atmospheres ...

Non-detection of Gravitationally Redshifted Absorption Lines in the X-ray Burst Spectra Of

During a 200 ks observation with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer, we detected 16 typeI X-ray bursts from GS 1826–24. We combined the burst spectra in an attempt to measure the gravitational redshifts from the surface of the neutron star. We divided the composite GS 1826–24 burst spectrum into three groups based on the blackbody temperature during the bursts. The spectra do not sh...

Towards Three Bursting Low - Mass X - ray Binaries from High Resolution X - ray Spectroscopy

We measured the galactic hydrogen column densities to the neutron-star binaries GX 17+2, 4U 1705−44, and 4U 1728−34 by modeling the Mg and Si absorption edges found in high-resolution X-ray spectra obtained by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We found for GX 17+2, NH = (2.38 ± 0.12) × 10 22 cm, for 4U 1705−44, NH = (2.44 ± 0.09) × 10 cm, and for 4U 1728−34, NH = (2.49 ± 0.14) × 10 22 cm. These va...
